Set in small town Louisiana, the story revolves around the lives and friendships of six women and Truvy’s Beauty Spot, a carport-turned-beauty-shop which serves as a great metaphor for the way these women bring beauty and depth to ordinary small town life.
In its 20th anniversary year, the cast, story and soundtrack continue to embody the title: Steel Magnolias.
Whenever I need a good cry and a good laugh, I reach for this one 9 times out of 10. Perhaps that’s why this movie is on the top of my “cry pile”. “Laughter through tears is one of my favorite emotions,” exclaims Dolly Parton’s character, Truvy in the 1989 film Steel Magnolias. The women in this movie are all those things and more, well, except for the thousands of years old part. A second single, "Just by Being You (Halo and Wings)," followed almost a year later in July of 2010 - in between, the duo released a self-titled EP early in 2010, followed by a slew of singles including the digital download-only singles, "Just By Being You," "It's Christmas Time," and "Last Night Again." On JanuSteel Magnolia were nominated for an Association of Country Music (ACM) award in the Best New Duo or Group category their self-titled debut album appeared a week later.Magnolias are an ancient flower that, though beautifully fragile and delicate looking, have stood the tests of time and the seasons of change over thousands of years. Linsey and Jones were contestants for the second season of Can You Duet? and ended up winning the competition, using the exposure to sign with Big Machine Records, which released a debut single, "Keep on Lovin’ You," in August of 2009. A native of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Linsey formed the duo with Jones, her boyfriend, whom she met while serving as a karaoke host in a Nashville bar. A country singing duo who took the 21st century path of winning a television talent show (Can You Duet?) to break into the public eye, Steel Magnolia consist of Meghan Linsey and Joshua Scott Jones.
